Ben & Bella Literary Trails

A magical outdoor reading adventure for children – coming to Bedford in 2025!

Artists & Associates

We’re thrilled to be working with Bedford Borough Council to bring stories to life through a series of enchanting literary trails for young children, based on Julia Jarman’s much-loved Ben & Bella book series.

Commissioned as part of Bedford’s Year of Reading 2025, this project invites children aged 3–7 (and their grown-ups!) to explore the world of books beyond the page – out in nature, parks, and community spaces.

Four Books, Four Adventures

We’re aiming to create four immersive trails – one for each of the Ben & Bella titles:

  • 🚂 Big Blue TrainRussell Park
  • 🛏️ Big Bouncy BedCentral Library
  • 🛁 Big Red BathBedford Park
  • 🚜 Big Yellow DiggerMowsbury Park (by the sandpit!)

Each trail will include:

  • A Spotter’s Guide – a colourful, illustrated map with activities, available at the Central Library and key local pick-up points.
  • Small sculptures and trail markers – bringing the stories to life along the route.
  • Optional digital extras – think QR codes, augmented reality, or video surprises!

When Will the Trails Launch?

We’re aiming for a summer or, at latest, an early autumn 2025 launch – just in time for families to enjoy the outdoors before winter sets in.

Who’s Behind the Project?

This is a commissioned project by Bedford Borough Council, led by Chris Morris, Head of Children & Young People’s Services. We’re also working closely with the Council’s Parks & Open Spaces team, ensuring that all installations are sustainable, low-maintenance and welcoming to all.

We’re also thrilled to be working with freelance producer Kaye Mahoney, who brings a deep understanding of early years engagement. Kaye is an early years practitioner developing her creative producing practice through our Bedford Producer Hub and regularly works with a young age group through playful projects like Puggle Club and Kaye-lideslope.

We’re proud to support Bedford Borough Council’s mission to make reading joyful, accessible, and part of everyday life – in libraries, parks, and imaginations.

This project is supported by Bedford Borough Council and Arts Council England.
