Ben and Bella Trails Launch this August Bank Holiday Weekend in Bedford

This August Bank Holiday, Bedford’s parks and library will be bursting with stories, laughter, and adventure as four playful Ben & Bella Reading Trails open to the public – celebrating the much-loved children’s books by Bedford’s own Julia Jarman, brought to life with the vibrant illustrations of Adrian Reynolds.

Part of Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading 2025, these free outdoor trails invite children and their grown-ups to follow colourful story markers through Bedford Park, Russell Park, Mowsbury Park, or Bedford Central Library, discovering one of Ben & Bella’s famous imaginary adventures along the way.

Over the 22–24 August 2025 launch weekend, each trail will open with its own themed celebration, based on a different book from the Ben and Bella series:

Big Red Bath TrailBedford Park, Friday 22 August, 1–4pm
Splish, splash, and meet some surprising bathtime visitors! Enjoy storytelling, face painting, and the grand reveal of the brand-new Big Red Bath Bench by local artist Paul Pibworth – the perfect new selfie spot.

Big Blue Train TrailRussell Park, Saturday 23 August, 10am–1pm
All aboard for an imaginative ride! Join in storytelling sessions and get creative with junk-model train-making.

Big Yellow Digger TrailMowsbury Park, Sunday 24 August, 10am–1pm
Dig into a noisy, muddy construction party – complete with a real digger ride!

Big Bouncy Bed TrailBedford Library, 22–24 August
Bounce into a bedtime adventure and explore the library in a whole new way.

Each trail is self-guided, with a free Activity Guide available from Bedford Central Library or park kiosks/cafes. Scan the QR code to see maps and starting points, and collect brass rubbings at every location. Complete all four trails and be one of the first 200 adventurers to win a special prize – just show your completed guide to library staff.
