Alex Levene

Alex is a creative producer, community arts manager and playful experience designer. He works across artistic forms, inside & outside to curate, produce and create events that engage local people of all backgrounds & experiences in performance arts & participatory projects.

His motivation is to create a more inclusive atmosphere for people to engage (actively & passively) with live forms of cultural expression, and encouraging citizens outside of major cities to build creative experiences on their doorsteps. He believes that access to cultural expression in your local area increases social cohesion, challenges entrenched views and awakens civic pride and social responsibility.

His artistic practice also looks at the performance and development of ritual & playfulness; with a focus on encouraging non-participants to take the initial step into more participatory performance. Alex is interested in how this first step into saying ‘yes’ to participation can build trust within communities & revive social engagement amongst citizens. He believes that many social issues can be improved through a more open approach to play, and playfulness amongst older people. His community-based practice is centred in Bedford.
