Women at The Wheel

23/01/2001 - 28/02/2001

Description

Inspired by the Mike Stubbs exhibition at BCA, this collaborative project brought together work by local women photographers and film makers. A cross section of women drivers agreed to participate and feature in the images, women driving ‘dream cars’, women using their driving skills in their working lives, women in a voluntary situation and women widening their domestic sphere through the use of the motor car.

Digitally printed images from the archive of the LAT Collection of Motorsport Magazine added an extra dimension to the exhibition. They illustrate how driving in the 1930s was almost exclusively an activity of the wealthy through to Formula One driving of the 1970s which was dependent on massive funding.
