Make amazing music and support immigration detainees – come and volunteer as a workshop assistant with Music in Detention.

Music In Detention takes music-making into Immigration Removal Centres. We run participatory workshops to help people cope with the experience of detention, give them a voice and build relationships between them, centre staff and local communities and the wider public.

It can be a tremendously rewarding experience to bring music and self–expression to people going through tough times and help them to connect with each other and to their own sense of worth. We are looking for volunteers who would like to gain experience of supporting music-making workshops in detention centres and in a variety of community settings. You will be assisting experienced artists in every workshop and will receive guidance and support from them and the MID team.

A passion for music and some musical ability is essential, as is an interest in working with people from a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds and of all age groups including young people and children. We are looking for people who readily empathise with immigration detainees and recognise the physical and emotional difficulties faced by people held in detention, as well as other disadvantaged groups in our communities.

Our workshops currently take place in Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Dorset and West London and we are looking for people who live in or reasonably near to these areas. This is so it is practical for you to volunteer with MID and so we can build stronger connections in the local communities we work in. You will need to be available to volunteer on weekdays and weekday evenings as this is when our workshops normally take place. We are looking for a commitment of at least 12 months and during this time would hope to be able to offer you around 6 days of volunteering. There is potential for more involvement depending on specific projects. We will pay your out-of-pocket expenses.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is Monday 13 March. Informal interviews will take place in central London on the morning of 21 March (Bedfordshire based volunteers) and 31 March 2017 (for Oxfordshire, London & Dorset based volunteers).
